About 1802, moved by a desire to live in a country where no slaves were held, friends of bush river began a migration to ohio Opposing slavery, the members moved west and settled quaker meetings in illinois, indiana, and ohio. My paper will rely on primary texts, such as the meeting minutes of the bush river quakers, for information on the south carolinian and quaker cultures Eventually, entire communities of quakers, such as those in wrightsborough, georgia, and bush river, south carolina, chose to leave their homes and move to the northwest territory where slavery was prohibited. I will also utilize secondary sources, such as george fox and early quaker culture and unification of a slave state, for analysis.

Bush river was by far the largest and most influential of the piedmont south carolina meetings, with attendance reportedly as high as five hundred They worked hard, lived comfortably, were honest and very religious, owned slaves at first, but at last set their faces against slavery and on one occasion turned a man out of their church (which was a great punishment) because he would not free his slaves. Abolitionists were persecuted, especially in the south, and when slavery was prohibited by the northwest ordinance of 1787, southwestern ohio became a destination for early quaker migrants into the northwest territory. Although the quakers may have resembled the puritans in some religious beliefs and practices, they differed with them over the necessity of compelling religious uniformity in society.
